What is a fungal nail infection?

Much like bacteria, fungi are naturally present in and on most parts of the body and normally they are nothing to worry about.

However there are times when a fungus begins to overgrow and that is when you might develop an infection.

In the case of your nails, whether toes or fingers, this is known as onychomycosis or tinea unguium and it can develop on, beneath or around the nail.

The same fungi that can cause athletes foot or ringworm can cause a nail infection and it is most likely to develop in warm, moist conditions.

This means a toenail fungus is more likely to overdevelop and become an infection than an infection in or around the fingernails, especially if your feet tend to sweat a lot and your trainers tend not to dry out between uses.

A fungal nail infection will usually develop after contact with someone else who has one. It can also be the result of sharing nail tools such as emery boards or nail clippers.

Older people and those with circulatory conditions or diabetes are at higher risk of developing a nail fungus.

People who wear false nails are also more likely to develop an infection and having an injury in or around a nail is a risk factor for an infection too.

What are the signs of a nail infection?

You will usually be able to tell when a fingernail or toe fungus develops into an infection.

The nail will become distorted or thickened and brittle and it will probably begin to lift away from the nail bed.

A fungal nail infection is normally odorous too, so you will quickly notice an unpleasant smell lingering around your hands or feet.

In most types of nail infections, white or yellow spots or streaks will appear on the nail and in some cases the nail itself will begin to peel or crumble.
