Cacti and skin isn’t something you’d think you can’t mix together, but that’s not necessarily the case.
In fact, cactus seed oil is something that is used in some cosmetic products and can supposedly offer your skin some pretty impressive benefits.
But what are they? Find out all you need to know about it, below.
Let’s start off simple. When you see cactus in the name of a cosmetic product, what does that actually mean?
If it’s listed as Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil in the ingredients, it means that it has come from the seeds of the cactus, which are most commonly found in cactus fruit – otherwise known as prickly pear.1
If you’ve ever hurt yourself by brushing against a cactus, you can be forgiven for thinking that it can’t do any good for your skin.
However, there are actually parts of a cactus that are beneficial for your skin, like cactus extract (or prickly pear seed oil).
This oil acts as an emollient, which means that it makes your skin soft and smooth. But we’ve got more on this below.
A benefit of prickly pear extract for skin is that it contains high levels of vitamin E.
It’s pretty well known that this particular component has been found to support healthy ageing and to reduce the appearance of dark undereye circles if that’s something you’re looking to change.2,3
Cactus seed oil in skincare is usually super hydrating and this is predominantly thanks to the high levels of fatty acids that it contains.
These acids (and specifically linoleic acid) not only contribute to keeping your skin barrier in check, but they also help to reduce water loss from your skin – aka keeping it plump and hydrated.4
Fortunately, cactus extract oil is considered to be safe to use for most skin types, providing you don’t already have an allergy to cactus products.
However, if you’re uncertain, it’s best to perform a patch test before applying it to a large area to ensure that you won’t react badly to it.
And there you have it! Impressed by what cactus skin care could do for you and your skin?
